About US
The
German Cultural Society of Erie was formed in 2004 by a group of people
who were born in Germany, had German ancestry or other connections
with the German culture. The German Cultural Society of Erie is
independent from any National group thus (1) keeping all funds within
the group and (2) having our own by-laws as determined by the State of
Pennsylvania for non-profit organizations.
According to our by-laws, we have a
president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and a board made up of
at least five members. A board meeting is held once each month, usually
during the first week of the month. Then a General Membership Meeting is
held each month one week after the board meeting to vote for items that have
come before the board. A program or entertainment
follows the General Membership Meeting.
These programs include topics of general interest to Germans and other
cultures, and are given by speakers inside and outside of the German
Cultural Society. The public is invited to the General
Membership Meeting and to the programs.
In
addition to the programs at the the general meeting, picnics, parties
and outings are scheduled during the year. Please see our Events page for more
details. Trips are planned and available to special locations of
interest such as river cruises in Germany and other countries.
The German Cultural Society of Erie has an active outreach program (1)
helping students to acquire funds for developing their interest in
German culture by funding trips to Germany, (2) seeking German exchange students, (3) granting scholarships to students who want to
further their studies in German language and culture (see Grants), and (4)
cooporating with various historical societies in Erie County.
Genealogical services are available. Members have maps of Germany,
telephone books of German cities to trace living relatives, and other
sources to trace German ancesters.
